Outdoor throw pillows add beauty and comfort to your outdoor seating areas. But before you go out and stock up, there are a few things you need to know.
What are they made of?
Outdoor throw pillows are made with an exterior shell is stuffed with filling, like regular throw pillows. The fabric shell for outdoor pieces is made to be soil and stain repellent, resistant to fading due to UV rays and mildew resistant. The fabric is usually some type of polyester or acrylic, depending upon the manufacturer. The stuffing is polyester fiber fill, which has similar qualities to the exterior fabric.
Outdoor decorative pillows can be put together in a couple of different ways. The most common type is a knife-edge pillow, which is thinner at the edges than in the middle and has a single seam all around. Another type is a box-edge pillow, which has several seams and a boxy shape, like a block of foam with a covering.
Caring for your outdoor pillows is fairly easy. The most important thing is to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning. In general, many outdoor fabrics can be hosed off with clear water on a regular basis, then allowed to air dry. This will prevent dirt buildup. When cleaning is needed, most fabrics should be spot-cleaned with a gentle detergent and cold water. Keeping the fabric clean will help inhibit the growth of mildew. Spills should be dealt with immediately to prevent staining.
