Saving energy saves money, and who doesn’t want to save money? There are things you can do around your home and with your decor that will help save you money over time.
Turn the Thermostat Down in Winter
In the winter, turn the thermostat to a lower temperature. Keep warm with electric blankets, which cost far less to operate than a heater or furnace.
Change Your Curtains
Insulated or blackout curtains can help keep your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. The panels keep cold or hot air from entering the room when they are closed.
Install a New Shower Head
Switch your old shower head for a new low-flow model. Not only will you save water, you’ll upgrade the look of your bathroom quickly and easily. There are many options to choose from, including massaging models.
Switch Out Your Lighting Fixtures
Upgrade your lighting fixtures inside and out with Energy-Star-qualified models. They are available in table, desk, and floor styles as well as options for porches, dining rooms, and bathrooms. These fixtures distribute light more efficiently and evenly—some even feature dimming.
Add a Fan
Ceiling fans help distribute cool air in the summer months and warm air in the winter months (when you switch the fan to reverse). Many models also feature lighting kits so they’ll do double duty. Ceiling fans can help you feel more comfortable while you keep your thermostat set at a more energy-saving temperature.
